The Public and Personal Promise of Certification

Dr. Rob Foshay

Why should you care about your professional certification? Why should your boss or client care? Why should society care?

Certification comes in a wide range of sizes and scopes: as small as a “badge” and as large as the CPT.  Traditionally, it’s based on knowledge tests or just attendance at training events. But there’s a powerful transformation under way: industries and professions are transitioning to certification based on real-world performance.

The bottom line: performance-based certification is having a huge effect on the way you and your employers need to define the purpose of training, assess your employees, and support career development. It also is giving you powerful new strategies for planning and building your own career.

Participants will be able to:

  1. identify a certification program as conventional or performance based
  2. state the advantages and tradeoffs of options for certification strategy, scope and size
  3. predict how the transition to performance based assessment and certification will transform the training industry, including their own careers

Rob Foshay consults on HPT, performance-based assessment and Instructional Design as a founding member and Practice Leader for The Institute for Performance Improvement. His background includes over 35 years of experience in the private sector. He also serves on the faculties of University of North Texas and Walden University.  A Life Member of the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI), he was a co-creator and committee chair of the Certified Performance Technologist (CPT). He has published over 80 articles in reference journals, book chapters, and books.
